Rodrigo Duterte, who has been dubbed as the “Donald Trump of the East”, is the presumptive winner of Philippines’ presidential election.

In case you are unaware, this is a man who had publicly burnt Singapore’s flag back in 1995.

In protest against the Singapore’s government hanging of Filipino maid Flor Contemplacion, who was convicted of the murder of another Filipino maid and a four year-old Singaporean child, Duterte led a crowd of about 1000 in burning the flag. He also urged Filipinos in Davao (of which he was Mayor) to boycott Singaporean products, and not to accept investments from Singapore.

We wonder if PM Lee would demand an apology from Duterte for his past actions before extending congratulations for his electoral victory.

In any case, wondering why Duterte has been compared to Trump? Well, read what he said on his presidential campaign trail, and you will surely see the similarities.

On Criminals:

“Forget the laws on human rights. If I make it to the presidential palace, I will do just what I did as mayor. You drug pushers, hold-up men and do-nothings, you better go out. Because I’d kill you,” he said at his final campaign rally in Manila on Saturday. “I’ll dump all of you into Manila Bay, and fatten all the fish there,” he added.

On the Pope:

“We were affected by the traffic. It took us five hours. I asked why, they said it was closed. I asked who is coming. They answered, the pope. I wanted to call him: “Pope, son of a whore, go home. Do not visit us again”.

On Viagra:

“I was separated from my wife. I’m not impotent. What am I supposed to do? Let this hang forever? When I take Viagra, it stands up.

On Rape:

“They raped all of the women… There was this Australian lay minister… when they took them out… I saw her face and I thought, ‘Son of a bitch. what a pity… they raped her, they all lined up. I was mad she was raped but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first.”Duterte speaking at a campaign rally about a prison riot in Davao in 1989 that saw inmates take a female Australian missionary working at the prison hostage before raping and killing her.

On the South China Sea:

“I will ride a jet ski (to the Spartly Islands) while bringing the Philippine Flag.”

On Donald Trump:

“He is a bigot and I am not”.

Yup folks, this is the man that our leaders will have to deal with in the next six years. Bilateral ties are going to be interesting.
