What's going on?

SDP’s full-time MP squad

One of the benefits for voting SDP’s Chee Soon Juan for Bukit Batok, at least according to the man himself, is that he will be a full-time MP.  On the other hand, PAP candidate Murali intends to keep his day job as a lawyer, and would only serve as a part-time MP for Bukit Batok.

Sounds like a good deal, doesn’t it? To have a full-time MP at your beck and call, speaking up for you and serving your needs all the time.

Chee seems to believe that the deal is really attractive too, and has spoken about this promise time and time again.

Quite the easy promise for Chee to make – afterall, he has been a (very well-paid) freelance writer and speaker for the past 20-odd years.

But his constant repetition of this promise leads us to wonder – is this the SDP’s official position? Afterall, Chee is the leader and de-facto face of the SDP.

And if this is the official SDP position, some of SDP’s members might want to prepare for a career switch when they are fielded for the next GE.

Looking back at GE2015, some of these mid-career switches could include:

1

Wong Souk Yee, candidate for Marsiling Yew Tee GRC and SDP Chairman, who would have to quit as a part-time lecturer at NUS.

2

John Tan Liang Joo, candidate for Marsiling Yew Tee GRC and SDP Vice-Chairman, who would have to quit as a lecturer at Kaplan.

3

Dr Paul Tambyah, candidate for Holland Bukit Timah GRC, who would have to quit as the Professor of Medicine and Senior Consultant for Infectious Diseases at NUH.

4

Chong Wai Fung, candidate for Holland Bukit Timah GRC and SDP Treasurer, who would have to quit as an Administrator at Ren Ci Hospital.

5

Jaslyn Go, candidate for Yuhua SMC and SDP Assistant Treasurer, who would have to leave the company she started with her husband.

6

Bryan Lim Boon Heng, candidate for Marsiling Yew Tee GRC and SDP CEC member, who would have to quit as a manager at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

7

Khung Wai Yeen, candidate for Bukit Panjang SMC, who would have to quit as an Accounts Manager in a European MNC.

8

Md Sidek bin Mallek, candidate for Holland Bukit Timah GRC, who would have to quit as a compliance auditor for a security company.

9

Damanhuri Abas, candidate for Marsiling Yew Tee GRC, who would have to quit as Director and Principle Consultant at Sirius Learning Universe Pte Ltd.

While we can’t say for sure how many SDP candidates would win in the next GE, we can definitely agree that under Chee’s requirements, any SDP candidate who wins would have to quit his/her day-job. And when that happens, job-seekers – now is your time!
