It wasn’t too long ago when Mr Yam Ah Mee was the hottest man in Singapore. It spawned many fan videos of his monotone voice while announcing the election results in 2011 and the Presidential Elections.

He has since stepped down as the Returning Officer in 2013 and joined Sembcorp Design and Construction.
Now, we have a new guy. The new Returning Officer is Mr Ng Wai Choong. He is currently the Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority (EMA) since April 1 2015.

So who is he?
Ng Wai Choong, 49, graduated in 1990 from the University of Tokyo with a Bachelor of Economics. He also attended Harvard Business School’s Program for Management Development in 2001. He is also a Japanese Government scholar after receiving the Monbusho scholarship offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Ng began his career in the civil service at the Finance Ministry in 1991. He served as the Deputy Secretary (Industry) at the Ministry of Trade & Industry from April 2004 to March 2007 before returning to the Finance Ministry. He has been with the Finance Ministry since 2007 as its Deputy Secretary (Policy). During his time at MOF, he helped build up several initiatives, including the GST Voucher, Pioneer Generation Package.
He also sits on the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority and the Singapore Totalisator Board.
Come 1st September, you’re gonna be seeing more of Mr Ng Wai Choong as he begins his role as Returning Officer.
