Your typical HDB lift lobby is about the get alot more exciting!

The government announced yesterday that lift landings of all public housing blocks will be installed with community smart screens. This is one of the latest initiatives to bring Singapore forward as a Smart Nation. In launching the new initiative, Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, who heads the Smart Nation Programme Office, also stated that the move is meant to foster greater community spirit amongst residents.

Now, the screens will provide very useful information on transport timings, weather and events happening within the area and community. However, how it is going to actually “foster greater community spirit” remains debatable. Perhaps residents will now gather at the lift landings to complain about the latest MRT breakdown or awkward conversations about the weather. Unfortunately, with the new alcohol law in place, residents will probably not be able to gather at the lift lobby to drink while catching up on latest events.
