Former TTSH nurse Ed Mundsel Bello Ello was charged today with 2 counts of sedition and 3 counts of lying to the police.
On the sedition charge, Ello had allegedly said that Singaporeans are “loosers” and said that they would “evict” Singaporeans from their own country. Ello was cited saying “pinoy better and stronger than Stinkaporeans” as well as he would “kick out all Singaporeans and SG will be the new Filipino state”.
For the first charge of lying to the police, Ello allegedly lied to the police at Chong Pang Neighbourhood Police Post that he did not post the comments on Facebook. And for the second charge, Ello is accused of lying to a police officer, saying he did not post the comments and his Facebook account had been hacked. He also is accused of lying to the same officer on January 5th.
Ello now faces a fine of up to $5,000 and/or jail for up to three years on each charge of sedition. He also faces jail for up to a year and/or a fine of up to $5,000 on each charge of lying to the police.
While some are attributing the charging of Ello to the “mounting public pressure”, one must wonder whether that is true. While it bears some resemblence to the Amos Yee case, it would definitely take a longer time to investigate and prove that he lied to police that he did not make the posts and his account had been hacked.
