Over the last few days, tonnes of fish found are being washed up along the shore due to something called a plankton bloom. This caused many fish farms to suffer immense losses and could potentially lead to some going out of business. One fish farmer even lost all 35 tonnes of his fish… an entire year’s worth of work. Perhaps this is why McDonald’s needs to raise prices on filet-o-fish.

Plankton is actually just micro-organisms and they reproduce very quickly in a matter of hours Under certain conditions, such as warmer temperatures and tidal conditions, a bloom happens and plankton multiplies quickly. There provides some link to global warming and plankton blooms may occur more regularly in the future. Large amounts of plankton in the water use up oxygen and eventually suffocate other life and clogs fish gills. Some types of plankton also release toxins.

While Singapore is a small country, our waters are relatively rich in marine biodiversity. More frequent plankton blooms will likely change the current environment and with the interconnectedness of wildlife, more species could be affected by continuing plankton blooms.

MND has rolled out an Agriculture Productivity Fund to help local farmers boost yields and raise productivity. AVA is also looking to develop closed fish rearing systems so that fish farms would be less exposed to the changing conditions of our seas. AVA has also started collecting and disposing of the dead fish as these can affect water quality and the ecosystem. But the Government needs to help them more. AVA obviously should consider assisting farmers to dispose dead fish more frequently and provide more financial assistance to farmers. These farmers are at the mercy of the environment and their jobs are on the line. Shouldn’t the Government do something about this?
